Gallery Label
A woman gazes boldly at us with her chin slightly lifted and her dark hair parted down the middle. Light hits the right side of her face, leaving the left in shadow. When Covington, Kentucky–born artist Frank Duveneck was teaching in Florence, Italy, he hired local peasants to serve as models. In this oil study, Duveneck applied paint loosely to suggest the woman’s collar, earrings, and necklace, as well as the background, then carefully modeled her facial features.

Provenance
Created by Frank Duveneck [1848-1919], the artist; acquired by Martin Dumler [1] [2]; probably by descent to Martin Dumler’s daughter-in-law, Mrs. Martin Dumler II. (Acquired by Mary Ran Gallery, Cincinnati, OH); purchased by Stanley and Frances D. Cohen, Cincinnati, OH, 1982; gift to the Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati, OH, 2012.

Notes:

[1]. Martin Dumler was a fellow artist and friend of Frank Duveneck. See 2012 letter written by Mary Leonhard Ran in Taft Museum object file. [2]. Martin Dumler probably purchased the painting directly from Frank Duveneck. See Taft Museum of Art object file.
