Commissioned from Raimundo de Madrazo Garreta, the artist, for Charles Phelps Taft, about 1903 [1]; purchased by Charles Phelps Taft [1843-1929] and Anna Sinton Taft [1850-1931], Cincinnati, OH, about 1903; Anna Sinton Taft [1850-1931], via widowhood, Cincinnati, OH, December 31, 1929; probably by descent to Jane Taft Ingalls [1874-1962], daughter of the previous, Cleveland, OH, 1931; by descent to Jane Davison, granddaughter of the previous, 1962 [2]; gift to Malcolm P. Davison, son of the previous; gift to the Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati, OH, October 26, 2012.

[1]. After receiving portraits of themselves, Charles Phelps and Anna Sinton Taft commissioned the artist to paint posthumous portraits of Anna’s mother and father. See Taft Museum of Art object file. [2]. According to the donor, Malcolm P. Davison, Jane Taft Ingalls willed the portrait to her granddaughter, Jane Davison, because they shared the name “Jane” with the sitter, Jane Ellison Sinton.
